How does a heat pump work?
Heat pumps are a modern energy technology that uses the natural ambient temperature to heat or cool a building. Heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the environment, either from the air, the ground or groundwater, and transferring it into the heating system. The principle of a heat pump heater works in exactly the opposite way to a refrigerator by evaporating, compressing, liquefying and expanding a refrigerant.
Heat pumps make a crucial contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions because they do not burn oil or gas, but are powered by electricity. If green electricity is used for heating and cooling, a heat pump is truly sustainable.
